Jael

Who is Jael? 

Jael is a woman mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. She is best known for her act of killing the Canaanite commander Sisera, who had been fleeing from the Israelite general Barak after being defeated in battle.

After fleeing the battle, Sisera came to the tent of Jael, who was the wife of Heber the Kenite, a descendent of Moses' father-in-law, Jethro. Jael offered Sisera shelter and hospitality, giving him milk to drink and covering him with a blanket. However, while he was sleeping, she took a tent peg and a hammer and drove the peg through his temple, killing him.

Jael's act of killing Sisera was seen as an important victory for the Israelites over their enemies, and it is celebrated in the Song of Deborah, a poem recorded in the book of Judges. The poem praises Jael's bravery and resourcefulness and portrays her as a powerful and heroic figure who played a crucial role in the defeat of the Canaanites.

Jael teaches us that what we have in our hands is powerful already. Jael was a tent dweller and was responsible for putting up the tents with a hammer and tent peg. Her arms were trained for it since it was part of their nomadic life. The opportunity presented itself but was prophesied by Deborah prior to the battle. We don’t need to compare ourselves to others, or fight to have all of the newest tools or language to serve God. All we need is what He already has placed in our hands. When we place all we are and all we have into His Hands, He uses the things in our hands to ensure victory.

Jael is a reminder that when we allow God to use what is common in our hands for His Glory, we in turn are forever changed
